The pressure for young athletes to perform in sports, especially those with subjective judging and weight classes, can unintentionally lead to eating disorders. In fact, a recent study found that 75 percent of gymnasts who were told they were overweight by a coach began purging and extreme dieting. Specialists at Atlantic Health System’s Eating Disorders Program say it’s critically important for parents and coaches to understand the psychological and physical signs of an eating disorder, so they can intervene before it leads to long-term health complications.
