New Atlantic HPV Center“How can I have melanoma? I’m careful in the sun.” This is one of the questions patients most often ask Eric Whitman, MD, the medical director of Atlantic Health System Cancer Care and an internationally-recognized melanoma expert. In a recent Twitter Live, he explained how melanoma can have a latency period of 30 to 40 years, so even if you’ve taken precautions in the sun more recently, serious sunburns from your past could still pose a risk. Other topics covered by Dr. Whitman include precautions for patients who’ve already had melanoma, the difference between melanoma treatments and those used to address other cancers, and promising new research.
